About this program
Biotechnische Chemie deals with the chemistry of living nature and its application in biotechnology. The focus is on the discovery, identification, synthesis, metabolism, and mechanism of action of biologically active compounds. The Master's program is modular and divided into a one-year specialization phase and a one-year research phase. The first year focuses on advanced lectures in modern areas of bioinorganic and bioorganic chemistry, leading to the current state of research. The content is supplemented by practical courses, which can also be conducted in working groups. Fundamentals of microreaction technology, nanotechnology, and quantum chemistry are also taught. Applicants are expected to have a very good foundational knowledge of chemistry and biotechnology, as well as good knowledge of biochemistry and other natural sciences. Familiarity with the thinking and working methods of chemists is assumed. The program offers a close integration of teaching and research in the working groups of the Institute of Chemistry and Biotechnology and in those of classical bioengineering disciplines.
