About this program

The Bachelor’s degree program in Biogenic Materials focuses on the development of innovative biogenic materials, addressing the finiteness of petroleum and fossil-based raw materials and the shift towards a bioeconomy. It combines requirements for processability and high-performance properties with sustainability aspects. The course provides specific knowledge about biodegradable, eco-friendly, or environmental damage-reducing materials obtained from renewable resources, fostering awareness of sustainable resource use. It covers technical details of extraction, transformation, shaping, processing, application, disposal, and structure-property interrelations of various material classes. Graduates will be equipped to develop innovative biogenic material systems for downstream users and will possess a deep understanding of sustainable practices. Fields of training include developing alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, reassessing traditional material production methods, and bioinspired material synthesis. Graduates will gain insights into structure-property relationships, resource-conserving planning, and interdisciplinary problem-solving, making them experts for a bio-economy defined future. The program emphasizes materials that are sustainable in production and life cycle, encouraging independent, critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches.
