About this program
Bildgestaltung / Kamera at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln is a teaching area within the Film and Television subject group. It understands camera work as an artistic practice. The engagement with visual design encompasses various forms of moving images and is explicitly not limited to classical genre boundaries. Special attention is paid to the perception of cinematic images – both in the process of their creation and in their reception by an audience. The focus is therefore on questions of perception, visual language, and visual dramaturgy: How are images created? How do they generate meaning, atmosphere, and emotional impact? And how do these effects change with context, time, and recipients? Teaching combines technical fundamentals with aesthetic and artistic analysis. Camera, lighting, and recording techniques are not taught in isolation but are understood as means of design – always in close interplay with content, space, movement, sound, and editing. In seminars and project work, students develop their own visual concepts and realize works along the entire production chain – from preparation and shooting to post-production. Practical exercises, film analyses, and joint viewings complement each other continuously. The seminars and individual consultations are supervised by the lecturers Prof. Patrick Orth, Prof. Sebastian Richter, Carina Neubohn, and Ernesto Sosa. The focus is on project-based work: teaching content is oriented towards the respective projects and questions of the students. The seminars are open to all students. The goal is to develop a precise visual language, strengthen collaboration in the film team, and develop criteria for differentiating and evaluating one's own and others' work.
