About this program
The Master's program "Beratung in der Sozialen Arbeit" (Counseling in Social Work) is designed for individuals with a professional degree in Social Work or a related field (pedagogical or psychosocial orientation) who are already working in a counseling capacity within Social Work. The program aims to enhance practical expertise, self-reflection, and scientifically founded approaches (theory and research). Students will gain in-depth theoretical knowledge of current societal challenges and counseling needs, various counseling approaches and methods, and practical skills through practice-oriented case work. The curriculum integrates pedagogical, psychological, sociological, legal, social policy, and ethical perspectives to qualify students for the diverse and complex challenges of counseling. The program emphasizes the establishment of counseling as a professional characteristic in Social Work, offering a school- and approach-independent education that explicitly includes academic-level counseling research and a high proportion of self-reflective modules. Graduates will be able to scientifically justify, professionally apply, and critically reflect on counseling in all fields of Social Work. They will be equipped to develop counseling concepts and methods tailored to individual personalities, fields of practice, and the needs of those seeking counseling, and to conduct applied counseling research. The program also prepares students for doctoral studies.
