About this program
The Master's program "Bauerhaltung und Bauen im Bestand" (Building Conservation and Construction in Existing Buildings) addresses the growing demand for experts in building conservation, renovation, and restoration. It is designed for graduates in civil engineering, architecture, and related fields. The program focuses on the responsible handling of existing building substance, teaching knowledge of historical construction methods and materials, with an emphasis on the technical aspects of building conservation. Students will learn to assess, recognize, preserve, and upgrade buildings. The curriculum balances historical preservation goals with modern usage requirements, fostering interdisciplinary teamwork between civil engineers and architects. Study objects include buildings, civil engineering structures, and technical facilities, primarily from around 1800 to the present, as well as medieval structures. The technical aspects are complemented by subjects from economics, law, history, and monument preservation. The program has evolved towards an application-oriented profile, strengthening practical relevance in most modules. Master's theses are often characterized as applied research with practical relevance. The study structure allows for completion in three semesters of full-time study, with flexibility for a four-semester or longer duration for part-time students, which is a common choice for those pursuing concurrent professional activities or managing family responsibilities. Teaching, especially in elective subjects, is supported by highly qualified practitioners who often serve as secondary supervisors for Master's theses. The program offers a broad scientific and practical expertise through elective courses and experimental work in the department's laboratories, allowing for individual specialization alongside generalist core subjects. Mandatory projects have high practical relevance and promote organizational skills, teamwork, independent work planning, application of diverse methods, scientific work and documentation, as well as presentation skills. The curriculum also emphasizes the development of key competencies through project work in mixed teams and the recognition of the faculty's role in fostering teamwork and networking. The interdisciplinary approach aims to improve understanding and collaboration between civil engineers and architects, without aiming to turn architects into civil engineers or vice versa. Master's theses can have a focus on engineering calculations or design and planning, depending on the student's background. Graduates will be capable of structuring, planning, coordinating, leading, and executing renovation and conversion projects in leadership positions, becoming communication-proficient generalists with specialized knowledge and methodological skills in building conservation.
