About this program
The Master's program in Arabic Studies offers a specialization in the Arabic world, allowing students to deepen their knowledge of Arabic and engage with original language sources on current or historical topics. The program provides a diverse range of subjects for research-oriented work and allows students to set their own focal points. Small group sizes ensure optimal supervision. In addition to a mandatory Arabic course, students can choose from various thematic and language modules, covering contemporary developments in the Arab world as well as classical Arabic heritage. Topics include Arabic media, Islamism, modern Arabic literature, the historical context of the Quran, and classical Adab literature. Emphasis is placed on a reflective methodological foundation. A unique aspect is the option to specialize in Arabic linguistics, with a systematic introduction to all forms of Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic, classical Arabic, Middle Arabic, dialects) and the opportunity to learn other Semitic languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Old South Arabian, Ethiopic). The program integrates modern linguistics and comparative Semitics, with a research focus on the grammar of classical Arabic. Students will also gain insight into traditional Arabic grammar methods. The field of Arabic Studies at Jena is embedded in a broad research landscape, fostering collaboration with areas like Intercultural Business Communication, the Institute of Philosophy, and the Theological Faculty. The Seminar for Oriental Studies maintains contact with significant collections, including a notable coin collection and the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha, which houses one of the largest collections of Arabic manuscripts.
