About this program
The Master's program in American Studies is an interdisciplinary, English-language program that examines the complexity of the United States – including its global and transnational entanglements – with a focus on US culture, literature, history, media, politics, and society. The program content combines complex and theoretically founded knowledge with the acquisition of research and practical skills. The program combines humanities with social science approaches. The focus of the study is on engaging with the society, culture, history, literature, and politics of the USA and their respective positions in international and intercultural contexts. This engagement takes place on the basis of a deepened reflection of the interdisciplinary methodology and theory formation of American Studies. The interdisciplinarity of American Studies is reflected in the structure of the modules. The majority are defined thematically – rather than methodologically, as is usually the case – and address a specific complex of topics from different disciplinary perspectives. A didactic focus of the Master's program in American Studies is project work, whether in the research seminars of the specialization modules or in the publication project of the program's own key qualification module. The aim is to train students' competencies in the independent development and execution of projects and to promote their linguistic and cultural competence in transatlantic subject areas.
