About this program

The Master's program in Egyptology builds upon the Bachelor's program, deepening and expanding knowledge of Egyptian language, culture, and archaeology. It allows for individual research and study focuses to sharpen one's academic profile. Practical application of acquired knowledge occurs in reading and epigraphy courses and potentially on excavations. The program is research-oriented, focusing on the languages, history, and culture of ancient Egypt from approximately 5,000 BC to 700 AD, covering Egypt, northern Sudan, and the Levant. Students learn at least two additional Egyptian languages (Old Egyptian, Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian, Demotic, Ptolemaic, Coptic) and gain practical experience in philology, archaeology, and museum work. The program concludes with a Master's thesis on a self-chosen research topic. The core subject comprises 90 ECTS, with the Master's thesis accounting for 30 ECTS. Modules are divided into language, culture, and archaeology, with at least 30 ECTS required in each. 20 ECTS can be used for specialization, including an extracurricular internship. A two-semester project work (10 ECTS) is mandatory. Teaching language is primarily German, but courses may be held in English.
