About this program

Egyptology is one of the ancient studies. It deals with the culture and language of Ancient Egypt, meaning all the legacies of people who lived in the area of present-day Egypt, northern Sudan, and the so-called Levant from the fifth millennium BC to the first millennium AD. Because the subject only imposes geographical and chronological boundaries, its research objects are very diverse: they range from archaeology to magic. The Bachelor's program in Egyptology covers two of the five stages of the Ancient Egyptian-Coptic language, monument studies, history, and culture of Egypt in pre-Islamic times. Geographically, the study covers the area of Egypt, northern Sudan, and the Levant, chronologically the period from approximately 5000 BC to approximately 700 AD. Through the networking of philological, linguistic, historical, archaeological, and art historical methods and perspectives, the degree program is designed to be broad enough to impart key competencies for numerous professional fields outside the narrower scientific area, such as tourism, media, publishing, and the diplomatic service. An additional profile of the Egyptology degree program at Leipzig University results from the close connection of the Institute of Egyptology with the teaching collection of the Egyptian Museum, so that in the narrower professional perspective of the Leipzig Bachelor's program in Egyptology, activities in the museum and exhibition sector and in cultural management lie.
