A Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory course in Germany for international students whose school certificate does not give direct access to a German university, and it ends with an exam called the Feststellungsprüfung. According to the DAAD admission database, a Class XII certificate from India with at least 70 percent, an HSSC from Pakistan with at least 50 percent and a WASSCE from Nigeria with five credits lead to a Studienkolleg, not straight to a Bachelor’s. Public Studienkollegs charge only the semester contribution, but teach in German, so you usually need at least B1 German to get in.

What is a Studienkolleg?

A Studienkolleg is a state or private institution that prepares international students for a degree in Germany. The DAAD says preparation usually takes two semesters and covers subject knowledge and German up to level C1. At the end you take the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), an assessment test that the DAAD says allows access to studies throughout Germany, within the subject area of your course.

Studienkollegs teach in courses for groups of subjects. You choose the course that matches the degree you want.

T courseMathematics, natural sciences, engineering, computer science
M courseMedicine, biology, pharmacy
W courseBusiness, economics, social sciences
G courseHumanities, German studies
S courseLanguage programmes

For example, a student who wants a Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering takes the T course, while a student aiming for business administration takes the W course. Not every Studienkolleg offers every course, uni-assist notes.

Do you need a Studienkolleg?

Whether you need a Studienkolleg depends on your school certificate, your grades and the subject you want. The DAAD admission database, which follows the rules of the German education ministers’ conference and is prepared with uni-assist, gives these results for the three most common certificates among our readers.

CertificateWithout university studyWith one successful university year
India, Class XII, at least 70 %Studienkolleg in the course matching your school streamDirect admission in the same or a related subject
India, JEE Main and Advanced passedDirect admission for technology and natural sciencesDirect admission
Pakistan, HSSC, at least 50 %Studienkolleg in the course matching your HSSC groupDirect admission in the same or a related subject
Nigeria, WASSCE with 5 creditsStudienkolleg with free choice of courseDirect admission in the same subject

The database is not binding and the university decides. It shows no route for a Class XII below 70 percent and says that an HSSC below 50 percent gives no access without further education. For Nigeria, the five credits must include two languages and one mathematics or science subject, from no more than two sittings.

How much German do you need?

Most Studienkollegs teach only in German, even if you later want an English-taught Bachelor’s, uni-assist says. The entry level differs. Studienkolleg Kassel asks for a B1 certificate, the Studienkolleg at Freie Universität Berlin asks for at least B2 and recommends C1, and the German missions in India ask for at least B1 for a German-taught preparatory course. Most Studienkollegs also hold an entrance test in German and usually mathematics.

For example, Kassel tests applicants with a German C-test and a mathematics test at middle-school level, and all Studienkollegs in the state of Hesse hold the test on the same day. If your German is at A2 today, book a course that gets you to B1 before the test date. Our German learning guide shows how to plan the levels.

Is there an English-taught Studienkolleg?

Only at a few private institutions, and with limits. For example, Studienkolleg NRW at Hochschule Fresenius in Cologne offers English T and W courses for 12,000 € over 12 months. Its English exam entitles you to apply for English-taught Bachelor’s programmes in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia only, while its German exam is valid at any German university. Public Studienkollegs teach in German and are free apart from the semester contribution.

How do you apply to a Studienkolleg?

  1. Check your route. Use the DAAD admission database for your certificate and subject.
  2. Choose your course and Studienkolleg. Make sure it offers your course, for example T or W.
  3. Apply to a university or through uni-assist. Many Studienkollegs admit you through a partner university.
  4. Take the entrance test. Prepare for German and mathematics.
  5. Apply for the visa. Use your Studienkolleg admission letter for a student visa.

Deadlines are often earlier than for degree programmes, uni-assist says, so apply at least eight weeks before. For example, Freie Universität Berlin accepts applications from 1 June to 15 July for the winter intake, while Studienkolleg Kassel closed on 1 June for winter 2026/27 and admits in winter only. Kassel also says that 2026/27 is its last intake. Our university application guide covers the application, and our guide to uni-assist and the VPD explains the evaluation.

Which visa do you need for a Studienkolleg?

You need a national student visa. Section 16b of the Residence Act includes attending a Studienkolleg as part of studies. The German missions in India accept a Studienkolleg admission letter, ask for proof of 11,904 € for the first year and almost always require an APS certificate.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting English teaching. Public Studienkollegs teach in German.
  • Choosing the wrong course. The course limits which subjects you can study later.
  • Missing the early deadline. Some Studienkollegs close by 1 June or earlier.
  • Ignoring the one-year route. A successful year at home can replace the Studienkolleg.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Studienkolleg free?

Public Studienkollegs charge no tuition, only the semester contribution. Private ones charge fees.

Can I take the Feststellungsprüfung without attending a Studienkolleg?

Yes, as an external candidate, the DAAD says, but places are limited. Freie Universität Berlin, for example, asks external candidates for C1 German and holds the exam once a year in May or June.

Can I switch subjects after the Studienkolleg?

Only within the subject area of your course. A T course qualifies you for technical and science subjects, not for business.

Where to start

Look up your certificate in the DAAD admission database and write down your route. If it says Studienkolleg, start German now and pick two or three Studienkollegs that offer your course, with their test dates and deadlines.
