Über diesen Studiengang

The Master's program European Media Studies is a cooperative program of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences and the University of Potsdam. The program combines aesthetic-theoretical and cultural-historical knowledge with practical media technology and design. Fundamental questions about theories, histories, and forms of appearance of the medial are combined with conceptual strategies. Reflecting on and with media promotes research work that independently integrates theory and practice. The Master's program European Media Studies conveys perspectives from cultural and media studies, taking current research into account. The focus is on questions of media theory, media aesthetics, and media art, as well as on investigations of concrete media configurations, strategies, and media cultural history(ies). A comprehensive overview of the methods and history of media theories and media cultures is developed. This is oriented across borders in the sense of the European idea of transnational connections, but its international perspective is not limited to Europe. Explicitly and with the awareness that Europe constitutes itself through exchange, interaction, and also conflicts with other regions, European Media Studies transcends territorial and cultural boundaries, pursues media studies questions on this side and beyond European traditions, and thus enables a critical engagement with European history and present. The unique profile in the German university landscape of a transdisciplinary and inter-university approach consists in the close interlinking of theoretical reflection and analysis with practical media design and conception. Here, you will learn to reveal theoretical positions (as aesthetic research) in practical work, to reflect on them yourself in projects, and to do the same with the media practices of theoretical work (such as writing). A high supervisor-student ratio is characteristic of the European Media Studies program. During your studies, you will have access to audio, video, and photo studios, computer and editing labs, as well as the largest computer game collection at a German university. The Master's program European Media Studies imparts advanced competencies in the analysis, conception, and critique of media. You will be enabled to critically engage with media and cultural theories independently and to realize your own media projects at an advanced level. This allows you to confidently meet the flexibility required by this work environment, as well as the high expectations for independent creative work in professional life. The study of European Media Studies provides the theoretical and practical foundations relevant for working in the following professional fields: Publishing and print media (feuilleton, media-specific and scientific programs), Radio and television (editorial, conception, and criticism), Internet and hypermedia (online editorial), Curation (festivals, museums), Editorial work for media-aesthetic areas (film and video production), Public relations and marketing, (international) cultural management, Media production (format development and format analysis), Media services, Independent media productions and services. The Master's program European Media Studies provides a good foundation for academic research-oriented work in the academic field across the entire spectrum of media research. It is possible to pursue doctoral studies afterwards.
