The program trains students in two subjects for teaching at grammar schools, including their didactics and educational sciences. It also includes a MINT-oriented interdisciplinary networking area (MINT = Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences, Technology). A strong practical orientation is integrated from the beginning with a company internship, a basic practical training, and a practical semester. The program concludes with the First State Examination. The "Lehramt Erweiterungsfach" (additional teaching subject) allows students to study a further subject, either parallel to their main studies or after completing the First State Examination. The subject of German focuses on the performance and impact of the German language and German-language literature in its historical development, aesthetic particularity, and social conditions. The study at TU Darmstadt is oriented towards the three German studies sub-fields: Modern German Literature Studies, German Linguistics, and German Language and Literature of the Middle Ages (Medieval Studies). During the course of study, students will specialize in either literary studies or linguistics. Subject didactics modules continuously teach students the foundational principles of good German teaching over several semesters. These skills are immediately applied in practical training and further deepened in other subject-didactic components of the study, which include knowledge of the framework conditions and fields of activity for language and literature instruction, as well as an overview of target-group-oriented teaching and communication techniques in school instruction. The educational sciences encompass pedagogy, psychology, sociology, political science, the basic practical training, and parts of the practical semester. The networking area, like the practical semester, is a joint offering of the subjects and educational sciences, available to students depending on their subject combination. It combines natural sciences, technology, and humanities and social sciences. The networking area differs in its compulsory and elective components depending on whether the subject combination includes at least one MINT subject or no MINT subject. Practical training consists of a basic practical training in the first half and a practical semester in the second half of the respective program. The focus of the basic practical training is the reflection of one's own suitability for the teaching profession. The focus of the practical semester is particularly the reflection of pedagogical action based on the knowledge acquired and deepened during the study. A company internship of at least eight weeks in a production, processing, trade, or service company is required and must be proven by the time of registration for the First State Examination. The Hessian Teacher Academy Darmstadt is responsible for its recognition.
